Gravel at night with Simone Venturelli
Gravel rides at night are a unique experience: the silence of nature, the moonlight illuminating the trails and the adrenaline of riding under the stars transform each ride into an unforgettable adventure. However, to fully enjoy these rides and ride safely, it is important to prepare yourself as best as possible.
Simone Venturelli , guide and bike packing travel expert, takes us on his latest night ride with his Gravel Overland . Here is his guide to experiencing the gravel world on night rides.
Before you set off, preparation is everything. To tackle a gravel ride at night in the best possible way, it is essential to equip yourself correctly. The first rule is to have good lighting : a powerful front light (at least 800-1000 lumens) will allow you to spot any obstacles on the path, while a red rear light will make you visible to others. It is always a good idea to carry a spare battery or a backup light, in case the main one runs out.
Clothing also plays a key role: temperatures can drop quickly at night, so layering is the best solution. A reflective vest or reflective details increase visibility, while gloves and shoe covers can make a difference on colder nights.
Finally, route selection is crucial. It’s best to stick to dirt roads and well-known routes, avoiding overly technical or isolated sections. A GPS with a preloaded track is essential to avoid getting lost, and sharing your itinerary with someone back home adds an extra layer of safety.
When riding, it is important to know how to enjoy the night in the saddle. Riding in the dark requires more attention than during the day. It is better to maintain a controlled pace, since the reduced visibility makes it more difficult to anticipate potholes, roots or other obstacles. When going downhill, it is important to brake gently and remain relaxed on the handlebars to better absorb the roughness of the terrain.
Even nutrition should not be neglected: the cold can make you underestimate the need to hydrate, so it is good to drink regularly. Bringing easily digestible snacks, such as bars or dried fruit, will help keep your energy levels high.
If you have never ridden a dirt bike at night, you absolutely must try it! It is a different and more intimate way to experience cycling, away from traffic and immersed in nature. It is also a great opportunity to improve your concentration, riding technique and ability to deal with new situations.
